Ultrasound Technology

March 20th, 2009

If you’re thinking about attending a technical school, but are not sure what direction you want to take your education for a career, why not consider a career as an ultrasound technician? If you’re not familiar with an ultrasound technician, we will review what tasks are asked of you as a technician, and we will talk a little bit about job placement and yearly salaries of an ultrasound technologist.

As an ultrasound technician, or also known as a sonogram technician, you will become an expert at using an instrument called a transducer. This instrument produces a high-frequency sound waves that will travel through the body of a patient. These high frequency sound waves then will bounce off the targeted part of the body, or the organ, echoing the sound waves back to the transducer where they are captured and then converted into a visual image that can be seen by the naked eye. This non invasive form of diagnosis allows doctors to find many medical issues without surgery. Many people associate an ultrasound technician with pregnancies. However doctors and health experts alike are finding more and more uses for ultrasound technology.

With that in mind the amount of jobs and the need for ultrasound technicians is growing rapidly. You can complete schooling in as little as 2 to 4 years, and land a job straight out of college earning about $35,000 per year. As your experience level grows and your your knowledge grows you will earn as much as $29 per hour, or up to $79,000 per year. There are many variables that make up the average ultrasound technician salary such as:

  • Job location (hospital, physicians office…etc.)
  • Geographic Location
  • Economy
  • Schooling Background
  • Job Experience
  • Job Demand

Take into consideration though that the variables mentioned above do not only effect the average ultrasound technician salary, but effect most job salaries whether a job requires higher education or not. A technician in California may make more than a technician in Ohio, but chances are this is because of economy and the average cost of living.

With so many uses for this kind of technology, it is obvious that the need for new technicians every year is growing so rapidly that ultrasound tech jobs will be in high demand for years to come. So if you’re considering attending some kind of technical trade school, by all means do some research and find out if becoming an ultrasound technologist is something that you would be interested in.
